Get started with cPanel hosting

Get started with Linux hosting

If you’re new to Linux hosting with cPanel, follow these basic steps to get started.

  1. Log in to your Trodomains account and go to your My Products page.
  2. If you haven’t set up your Linux hosting account yet, click Web Hosting, and next to your account click Set Up. Follow the instructions to set up your cPanel account.
  3. Use a FTP client to upload your files. Your hosting account uses public_html as the root directory for your primary domain. For more info, see FTP: Upload my files to cPanel hosting.
  4. If you don’t have a website yet, install a content management system (CMS). A CMS is an application you can use to build a website and manage all its content. Some examples of CMS applications are WordPress, Drupal, and joomla. For more on uploading applications, see Install applications in cPanel hosting.
  5. After you have your site up and running, use cPanel backups, so you never have to worry about losing your site content. For more information, see Back up my website in cPanel hosting.

cPanel is a control panel that lets you easily manage many aspects of your account, including the files, applications, and email hosted on your account or server. cPanel is available on our Linux-based hosting accounts and servers.

For our server customers, cPanel is used in conjunction with WebHost Manager, or WHM. WHM provides administrative control of your dedicated or Virtual Private Server (VPS). You use WebHost Manager to create individual accounts, add domains to your server, manage hosting features, and perform basic system and control panel maintenance.

Remove DomainsRemove domains you added but no longer want to use on this hosting account. This also lets you move domains between hosting accounts.

Change Primary DomainChanging the primary hosted domain lets you host a different website in the root folder of your hosting account.

Change Secondary
Domains’ Folders
Secondary domains can use folders besides the hosting account’s root as the root for their websites — you can change which folders they use at any time.

Web & Classic / cPanel / Plesk
Add SubdomainSubdomains are for websites using anything in front of your domain besides www. For example, in blog.coolexample.com, blog is a subdomain.

Web & Classic / cPanel / Plesk

Subdomains let you create memorable addresses and easy ways to access areas of your website. For example, you could create a subdomain for pictures on your site called “pics” that is accessible through the URL pics.example.com in addition to www.example.com/pics.

  1. Log in to your Trodomains account.
  2. Click Web Hosting.
  3. Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
  4. In the Domains section, click Subdomains.
  5. Complete the following fields, and then click Create:
    • Subdomain — Enter the subdomain you want to use for one of your hosted domain names.
    • Select the domain name for which you want to create the subdomain.
    • Document Root — Enter the directory you want to use as the root directory for the subdomain’s website, or use cPanel’s default.

You can also Remove subdomains from this page.

To Redirect Subdomains

  1. In cPanel, in the Domains section, click Subdomains.
  2. In the Modify a Subdomain section, next to the subdomain, click Manage Redirection.
  3. In the coolexample.com redirects to field, enter the URL you want to use, and then click Save.

Only our Deluxe, Premium, Unlimited, and Ultimate hosting accounts can host multiple websites. For more information, see What type of hosting account do I have?

Note: While we offer unlimited domain aliasing on our Deluxe, Premium, Unlimited, and Ultimate shared hosting accounts, we do not recommend using shared hosting for more than ten websites. Doing so taxes the server resources and hinders performance.

To host multiple websites on your hosting account you must:

  1. Add the domain name to your hosting account and select a folder for its website.
  2. Upload the domain name’s website’s files into the folder you select.
  3. Point the domain name’s DNS to your hosting account.

Add the Domain Name

The first step is to add the domain name you want to use a Secondary domain on your account. For more information, see Add domains.

Upload the Website to the Folder You Select

Here’s where our support department sees the most issues. To avoid these issues, remember that each website uses its own folder — the one specified when you added the secondary domain name.

Take a look at the following screenshot for more explanation:

thumbnail

The screenshot uses a Web Hosting account. If you use cPanel or Plesk, your file structure will look slightly different. For example, cPanel’s Secondary domain names each have their own directory in the public_html. Plesk’s secondary domain names each have their own directory in the hosting account’s root.

To Upload to Your Secondary Domain

  1. Connect to your hosting account, or use the FTP File Manager. For more information, see FTP: Upload my files to cPanel hosting.
  2. Browse to the folder you selected in the Add the Domain Name Section. In this example, that folder is anothercoolexample.
  3. Upload the files to that folder.

The files you upload to that directory should have an index file, which is what makes your website display. Usually, this file is called index.htm or index.html, but there are other valid options. For more information, see What file displays when someone browses to my domain name?

That’s it. Remember, if you just added the Secondary domain name to your hosting account, it can take 24-48 hours before you can see your changes on the Internet.

Point the Domain Name’s DNS to Your Hosting Account

If the domain name you added and hosting are in the same customer account, we automatically update the domain name’s nameservers, so the website starts resolving in 24-48 hours.

However, if the domain name is in another customer account or if its registered elsewhere, you must manually update the domain name’s nameservers (more info) or IP address (more info).

If you have built your website with a text editor or program such as Dreamweaver, you will need to use an FTP client to upload your website from your computer to your cPanel hosting account.

Note: Your cPanel hosting account must be set up before you can upload files to it.

Find your FTP settings

  1. Log in to your Trodomains account.
  2. Click Web Hosting.
  3. Next to the cPanel account you want to use, click Manage.
  4. Make note of the IP address and cPanel username shown on the hosting plan details page. If you do not know what your cPanel password is, you can also change it from this page.

Connect to your cPanel account using your FTP client

We recommend FileZilla for FTP, but you can also use the FTP settings that you located previously for other FTP clients and sitebuilders. The instructions below reflect connecting via FTP with Filezilla.

  1. Download, install, and launch FileZilla.
  2. At the top of your Filezilla window, you will see a Quickconnect bar. QuickConnect bar
  3. In the Filezilla Quickconnect bar, fill in the following information and click Quickconnect:
    FieldWhat to enter…
HostYour domain name or IP address
    UsernameYour FTP/cPanel username
    PasswordYour FTP password
    Port21

Move files from your computer to your cPanel account

  1. In the Remote Site area on the right hand side of Filezilla, open your website’s root directory.
  2. In the Local Site area on the left hand size of Filezilla, open the folder containing your website. This folder should contain your website’s index file – like index.html or index.php.
  3. To upload your website, select all of your website’s files and directories, and then drag them from the Local Site area into the Remote Site area.

Note: How long it takes to upload your website depends on its size and your internet connection.

Now that your files are uploaded, you can go to your domain name and see your website!
